What does a private jet cost to operate?
Nobody official publishes the answer, so this tool does not pretend to. It gives you the structure and does the arithmetic on figures you supply. On the worked example below, 200 hours a year on illustrative unit costs comes to $1,036,500 a year and $5,183 an hour all in, and 51.6% of that is fixed cost you pay whether you fly or not.
Behind the numbers
- No official body publishes private jet operating costs, and this site does not invent them. There is no regulator, statistical agency or trade body figure to cite for crew pay, hangarage, insurance, management fees or maintenance reserves. Every money input above is a placeholder for a number you should get in writing from your own operator, insurer and maintenance programme. Treat the defaults as an illustration of the model's shape, not as typical 2026 market rates.
- The one figure that is sourced is fuel. The default of $3.43 a gallon is the US Energy Information Administration's US Gulf Coast kerosene-type jet fuel spot price FOB for the week ending 7 August 2026, from the series released on 12 August 2026 (EIA). Spot is a wholesale benchmark. It is not the posted retail price an FBO charges into the wing, which carries into-plane, handling and margin on top, so enter what you actually pay.
- Costs are split the way an operator's ledger splits them. Fixed costs accrue with the calendar: crew, hangar, insurance, management fee, subscriptions. Variable costs accrue with the hour or the landing: fuel, maintenance and engine reserves, landing and handling. That split is why the cost per hour on this page falls steeply as annual hours rise.
- Trip fees are entered per trip and spread across the hours in an average trip. Two hours of flying done as one leg costs less on the ground than the same two hours done as four short hops, which is why average trip length is an input rather than an afterthought.
- The model covers operating cost only. Acquisition price, finance interest, depreciation, refurbishment, aircraft registration and property taxes, and any revenue from placing the aircraft on a charter certificate are all excluded. A depreciation or tax figure would depend on jurisdiction and structure, and no single number would be honest.
- The regulatory basis of the flight changes the cost base and is not modelled. In the United States, owner flights not involving common carriage run under 14 CFR part 91, while carrying passengers for compensation or hire generally requires an air carrier or operating certificate under 14 CFR 119.1 and part 135. In the UK, non-commercial flights in a complex motor-powered aircraft require a Part-NCC declaration to the Civil Aviation Authority rather than an AOC (CAA).

One fixed set of unit costs, flown for different numbers of hours a year. This is the single most important relationship in private aviation economics and the one a headline hourly rate hides: at 50 hours a year, four fifths of what you spend has nothing to do with flying.

- On one constant set of unit costs, a jet flown 50 hours a year costs roughly 3.9 times as much per hour as the same aircraft flown 600 hours a year, because the fixed base does not move.
- At 50 hours a year, 81% of the annual operating cost in this model is fixed. At 600 hours it is 26.2%.
- There is no official published figure for private jet operating costs. Regulators publish safety and certification rules, and the EIA publishes jet fuel spot prices, but crew, hangar, insurance, management and maintenance reserve costs are private commercial terms.

How much does it cost to operate a private jet per hour?
There is no published market figure, and the honest answer is that it depends on how many hours a year you fly. Holding one set of unit costs constant, our model produces $13,208 an hour at 50 hours a year and $3,399 an hour at 600, because the fixed base does not move with utilization.
Why does this site not publish typical hourly rates by aircraft class?
Because no regulator, statistical agency or trade body publishes them, and a range we could not source would be a guess wearing a table's clothes. The calculator takes your own quotes for crew, hangar, insurance, management and maintenance reserves, and the only externally sourced price on the site is the EIA jet fuel spot series.
What are the biggest costs of running a private jet?
On the fixed side, flight crew is usually the largest single line, followed by hangarage, insurance and the management fee. On the variable side, fuel and hourly maintenance and engine reserves dominate, with landing and handling driven by the number of legs rather than the number of hours.
Does flying fewer hours save money?
It saves variable cost and does nothing to fixed cost. In our model, dropping from 200 hours a year to 100 cuts the total by about 24% but raises the cost per hour by more than half, which is the trap behind buying an aircraft for occasional use.
Does putting the aircraft on a charter certificate reduce costs?
It can offset them with revenue, but it changes the regulatory basis of the operation and its cost base. In the United States, carrying passengers for compensation or hire generally requires certification under 14 CFR part 119 and operation under part 135, which brings additional crew, maintenance and oversight requirements. Model the certificated cost base, not the private one, before counting the revenue.
